“My parents had given me a three-quarter length Levi's jacket when I was a sophomore in high school. And I went to this performing arts high school, and had a kid just put everything all over it. Like he just took acrylic paint and just did this Jackson Pollock-esque creation. When I rocked it for lunch period, my future partner in The Roots was amazed he was like, ‘Your mom let you do that to that jacket?’ I was like, ‘Yeah.’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, it's dope.’ And that's the beginning of The Roots. A jacket.”
